Pain pressure threshold (PPT) measurement by handheld algometer has been validated as a tool to identify and quantitate myofascial pain sites in an individual. The average of 3 readings at a given muscle site is used, so the standard error of measurement of these devices must be considered when determining whether PPT differences between muscle sites represent true changes.
